Mark’s Story

“I’ve come to realise that our future, rather than being a damage limitation exercise, could be a renaissance. I’m not saying the future will be better, I’m saying it could be – and everyone of good conscience should be in that game.”

Mark Stevenson has been called various things including ‘Serendipity Engineer’, ‘Ideas Broker’, ‘Roving Learner’, ‘Futurologist’, ‘Anti-cynic’ to name but a few, but ‘Cultural Engineer’ is perhaps the best way to describe his work and ambitions.

“I want to put an optimism of ambition about the future and critical thinking into the heart of culture in the same way Beyoncé and football are,” he says.

His mission has seen his critically acclaimed book An Optimist’s Tour of the Future translated into four languages and enter development as a cinema release documentary and spin-off TV series. With a side-career as a comedy writer Mark is in demand as a public speaker and columnist spreading what he calls “a meme of critical thinking optimism”.

Outside of the media Mark is the founder of the League of Pragmatic Optimists, co-founder of both Flow Associates (which provides “consultancy, products and design for a learning planet”) and science communications agency ReAgency, as well as a consultant to a host of organisations, from the boards of multi-national corporations to individual schools, helping them play their part in making the world a better place.
